Chana Dhal

Lovely simple dhal which is still tasty! Serve with some fresh greens, or with a vegan 'fish' cake or as a side to any Indian meal.

  • Yields: 2 as a main


225g yellow split peas (chana dhal)

1 pint water

1/2 tsp turmeric

4 thin slices of ginger

1 tsp salt

1/4 tsp garam masala

3 tbsp oil

1/2 tsp cumin seeds

2 cloves garlic, chopped

1/2 tsp chilli powder

Coriander to garnish


1Boil the lentils and remove the scum

2Add turmeric and ginger

3Cover leaver slightly ajar on low for 1 hour

4Add salt and garam masala and stir

5Heat oil in a separate pan

6Add cumin and a few seconds later add garlic

7When the garlic is browned add chilli powder

8Immediately take off the heat and add to the dhal

9Serve garnished as coriander

This is a very tasty dhal which honestly I was not expecting from the limited list of ingredients! It did take over 2 hours for the lentils to break down though so just a warning to leave more time – I believe it changes from brand to brand and also depending on the age of the lentil. Make a double portion to cover 2 people as a main dish.
