Chana Dhal

Lovely simple dhal which is still tasty! Serve with some fresh greens, or with a vegan 'fish' cake or as a side to any Indian meal.

 225 g Yellow split peas (chana dhal)
 1 pt Water
 ½ tsp Turmeric
 4 Slices of ginger
 1 tsp Salt
 ¼ tsp Garam masala
 3 tbsp Oil
 ½ tsp Cumin seeds
 2 Cloves garlic, chopped
 ½ tsp Chilli powder
 Coriander to garnish

Boil the lentils and remove the scum

Add turmeric and ginger

Cover leaver slightly ajar on low for 1 hour

Add salt and garam masala and stir

Heat oil in a separate pan

Add cumin and a few seconds later add garlic

When the garlic is browned add chilli powder

Immediately take off the heat and add to the dhal

Serve garnished as coriander

  1. This is a very tasty dhal which honestly I was not expecting from the limited list of ingredients! It did take over 2 hours for the lentils to break down though so just a warning to leave more time – I believe it changes from brand to brand and also depending on the age of the lentil. Make a double portion to cover 2 people as a main dish.
