Privacy Policy

Last updated 25 September 2026

This policy covers the Vegan Eat website (veganeat.co.uk) and the Vegan Eat iPhone app. It explains what we store about you, why, how long we keep it, and how to delete it. You can browse and read recipes on both without an account, and we store nothing about you personally when you do.

What your account holds

When you create an account, we store:

  • Your email address and name.
  • Your password, as a one-way hash. We can't read it, and no one at Vegan Eat can see it.
  • Whether your email address is verified and whether your account is approved.
  • Recipes you write, including drafts, and the photos you upload with them.
  • Comments you post, ratings you give, and comments you report.
  • Your favourites and your meal plans.
  • The people you block in the app. These are kept on your iPhone only, not on our server.

If you comment without an account, we store the name and email address you give with the comment. We use the email address only to confirm the comment is yours; it's never shown publicly.

What our server records

To keep accounts secure and to look into problems, the server keeps an activity log of events such as sign-ins, sign-ups, password changes, recipe and comment changes, and emails sent. Each entry can include:

  • your IP address;
  • your browser or app details (the "user agent", such as the browser name and version);
  • for emails we send you, the address, the subject and whether it was delivered.

When you sign in to the app, we also store the kind of device (for example "iPhone") and when the app last used your sign-in, so a stolen sign-in can be spotted and ended.

To stop abuse, the server counts requests from each IP address for a short time (at most an hour) and then discards the count.

Cookies and analytics

The website sets one cookie, when you sign in, to keep you signed in. It sets no advertising or tracking cookies.

We count page visits on the website with Plausible Analytics, which we run on our own server. It uses no cookies and doesn't record who you are; we see totals such as how many people viewed a recipe. The app has no analytics.

How we use it

We use what we store only to run Vegan Eat:

  • to sign you in and keep your account secure;
  • to show your recipes, comments, ratings, favourites and meal plans;
  • to send account emails (verification, password reset, approval and similar);
  • to moderate recipes and comments, and to deal with abuse.

We don't sell your data, share it with advertisers, or use it for advertising. The app doesn't track you.

Who else handles it

A few services handle data for us, only to provide Vegan Eat: our email provider sends account emails, and recipe photos are kept in cloud storage. We don't give your data to anyone else unless the law requires it.

What others can see

Published recipes show the author's name. Comments show the name you give. Your email address, ratings, favourites and meal plans are never shown to other people.

How long we keep it

  • Your account and everything in it are kept until you delete your account.
  • Database backups are kept for up to 30 days, so deleted data leaves the backups within 30 days.
  • Activity log entries are kept for 12 months as a security record, then deleted automatically. Deleting your account doesn't remove them sooner.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account at any time:

  • In the app: Account, then tap your name, then Delete Account.
  • On the website: sign in, open your profile, and choose Delete Account.
  • By email: write to help@veganeat.co.uk from the address on your account.

When you delete your account:

  • you're signed out on every device;
  • your name, email address, password, ratings, favourites and meal plans are deleted straight away;
  • your comments stay on the recipes but are shown as from "Former member", and your name and email address are removed from them;
  • recipes you wrote stay on Vegan Eat, credited to Vegan Eat instead of you. If you want a recipe removed, email us.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of the data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email help@veganeat.co.uk. If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
